Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park covers 70,000 hectares and stretches for 65km of the Southern Alps. It encompasses spectacular mountain scenery and New Zealand's longest glacier. At 3754 metres, Mt Cook is the highest mountain in Australasia and was first climbed in 1894. The nucleus of the Park was set aside as recreation reserve in 1887, and gazetted as a National Park in 1953.
The drive beside Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook village is one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand. Your visit to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park will be one of the highlights of your holiday in New Zealand.

Twizel came into being in 1968, to house workers on the largest hydro-electric undertaking in New Zealand’s history. The resultant lakes, all an easy drive from the Lodge, are popular for boating and fishing. Twizel has a choice of excellent restaurants.
Directions for Driving to Matuka Lodge Approaching Twizel from the north, about 5mls/8km after passing the turnoff to Aoraki/Mt Cook, cross the Twizel River and take the next turn to the right, Glen Lyon Road. Approaching from the south, approximately 19mls/30km after Omarama, go past both turnoffs into Twizel, take the next turn to the left, Glen Lyon Rd. After 2 ½ mls/4 km turn left into Old Station Road. Matuka Lodge is on your left.
